There are different methods of doing SEO and depending on their procedure they are categorized into Black,White and Grey techniques.

Black Hat SEO-Techniques that search engines do not approve referred to as Black hat optimization.It is the illegal way of optimizing a website because it goes against the rules of search engines.The main purpose of doing Black hat SEO is to rank higher in search results.It focuses only on search engines and not so much a human audience.Some techniques used for this SEO includes Link farm,Hidden text,Keyword stuffing,Paid links,Doorway pages,Cloaking,Parasite hosting,Manipulative redirects.It is a short term strategy and if search engine finds your site possibly your site would be  banned and de-indexed as a penalization for using unethical techniques.

White Hat  SEO-Techniques that search engines recommend referred to as White hat optimization.It is the ethical and best method of optimizing a website by following all the rules of search engines.It is a lengthy process but long term results are profitable and permanent.It includes Quality  content,Adding fresh Content,Internal & External linking,Title tag and Meta tag optimization,Guest blogging,Sitemap creation.

Grey Hat SEO-This method lies between black & white optimization.It is a little tricky approach to optimization which does not break any rules but bend them slightly.This would not give you a serious risk like a site ban but might result in a penalty.It includes Buying links,Reciprocal link exchange,Duplicate content,Irrelevant content,High keyword density,Article spinning,Purchasing old domain.There are medium level of risk is always involved in this method so it is not a permanent strategy.
