Basic Internet Terms

We use the internet for various purpose and almost everyday but if anyone asks what is meaning of " internet" many of us could not give an accurate answer.As we struggle to give an accurate definition of the internet and web related terms it's time to learn some basic internet terms so we have a much better understanding of the tools we all use on daily basis:

1.Internet-Internet is the network  of millions of computers used to transfer information one another.The internet abode many layers of information with each layer committed to a different kind of documentation.These different layers are called "protocols'.The most renowned 'protocols' are the world wide web,FTP, Telnet, email and instant messaging.

2.World Wide Web-The world wide web is the most popular portion of the internet.people often use the term 'world wide web' or web for short to define to the internet but they are not the same thing.the web operate over the internet and is the most popular part of the internet.web lets you access information on the internet.It may include text,graphics and links to other spots in the web.

3.Search engines-It is a software that allows you to search the web by typing in a topic of interest.Example of search engines are Google,Yahoo,Bing.When we type keyword  in the search box these search engines finds them on the web and gives us the exact matches.

4.Browser-To access the web we need a browser.A web browser is a free software package that lets you view web pages,graphics and most online content.It interprets the HTML and XML documents into readable documents and displays it on your computer screen.

5.HTML-Hyper Text Markup Language is the language that is used create websites.HTML uses commands called 'HTML Tags'.A website created in complete HTML is also called static website.

6.XML-XML is 'Extensible Markup Language' another programing language.It focuses on data basing the text content of a web page.

7.Website-A location on the world wide web and internet that contains information about a specific topic.A website usually contains different pages with different types of information about the topic.

8.IP Address-Internet protocol address is the real address.It is a four or eight part electronic number that a web address name translates to.It can look like '303.4.102.44' or like '33CE:D4:0:3I4F:3BB:EE:CE37:GH4A'whenever a  computer or any other device access the internet the IP address acts like a license  to identify.

9.Domain Name-Domain name is the real name of your website.If you know the domain name you don't have to remember the IP number to in order  to visit a website.These names are part of a website's URL.

10.Sub Domain-A sub domain is a domain that is a part of a larger domain but completely separate.A sub domain address would be like www.groupeight.blogspot.com the groupeight is the sub domain.


11.URL-URL or “Uniform Resource Locator” is the address for a website. When people type the url into the address box of the browser they  get  to a specific  site.URL’s commonly  use there parts to address a page or website:
·         The protocol
·         The host computer
·         The file name

12. HTTP-Hyper text transfer protocol is the method used to transfer information of the internet.When a web page has this prefix then your links, text and pictures should work in your web browser.

13. HTTPS-Hyper text transfer protocol secured like http it’s a set of rules for transferring information between browser and server but this time it’s done over a secure encrypted connection to hide your personal information and pass words.

14. Spam-Spam is the unwanted or junk email. It is mainly two categories advertising use and hacking.

15. Filtering-Filtering is like a defense against spam. It is software that reads your incoming email then delete that appear to be spam. Look for ‘spam’ folder in your mail box to see your filtered mail.

16. Malware-Malware is malicious software designed by hackers. It includes virus,Trojans,zombie programs. It can steal your private information, get control of your computer, and influence you into purchasing something. It is a deceitful hacker program.

17. Trojan Horse-A Trojan is a special kind of hacker program. It is a type of virus that arrives as something safe and infects a computer only if the user invites it by clicking a link, opening an email attachment or downloading it from the internet.

18.Broadband-Broadband relates to a type of internet connection.It is the high speed connection.It is faster to use then the traditional telephone and modem as information can be transfer much quicker.

19.Bandwidth-Bandwidth describes the maximum data transfer rate of an internet connection.An internet connection with a large bandwidth can transfer a larger amount of data much faster than an internet connection with a lower bandwidth.

20.Add Ons-Add ons are software program that is added optionally to a program to enhance the ability of that program.Adobe flash is a great example of a software add on that gives internet browser the ability to watch flash videos.

21.Plug Ins-Plug Ins  are special kind of software program or hardware device that adds a specific service to a larger system.It is installed into an existing application in order to enhance its capability.

22.Router-Router is a hardware device that joined multiple networks together.It can be wired or wireless both.It acts like a security for network signals.

23.Firewall-Firewall is a safeguard against hackers.It can either software or hardware but the ideal configuration will be consist of both.

24.ISP-ISP is internet service provider.It is the private or government company that provides you with internet access.ISP company will offer various services at various price.ISP company will also offer internet connection speed for a fixed fee.
